Abstract:
Aging is a universal and inexorable process in all organs and tissues of the human
body. But, it can occur in varying degrees. The gradual reduction of the glomerular
filtration rate is the sign that our kidneys are aging and becoming insufficient. However,
caution should be exercised in the diagnosis of chronic renal failure and in the indication
of renal replacement therapy for those over 65 years of age. Functional loss varies from
individual to individual, we have few reliable diagnostic tools to assess the exact renal
function in this population and it is very difficult to differentiate what is a natural and
physiological process of aging from a pathological one. In addition, we have many doubts
when choosing the best therapeutic modality, the one that will bring better quality of life
associated to the prolongation of life, and we are still uncertain when we should indicate it
and establish what benefits will be achieved. Therefore, there are many new challenges
facing increased longevity, and we are still learning what normality means in the elderly
and how to define quality of life in this population.
