Rare Renal Diseases and Renal Replacement Therapy: What We Know Now (pp. 301-316) $100.00
Authors:  (Cassiano Augusto Braga Silva, Fellype de Carvalho Barreto, Maria Helena Vaisbich, and Osvaldo Merege Vieira Neto)
Rare diseases receive this classification because of their low prevalence. There are at
least 150 rare pathologies affecting the kidneys, some with a high rate of progression to
end-stage renal disease. Approximately 10% of adults and almost all children undergoing
renal replacement therapy have a rare disease as their etiology. We will describe, with
emphasis on the peculiarities related to renal replacement therapy, four of the main rare
diseases found in the daily life of the nephrologist, all with a high potential for evolution
to chronic nephropathy. Nephrologists should be aware of the particularities of these
diseases to delay progression and, when necessary, decide on the best method of renal
replacement therapy for each patient.
