We Need to Talk about Living Kidney Donation (pp. 221-234) $100.00
Authors:  (Josť A. Moura-Neto, Ana Flavia Moura, and Edison Souza)
Living kidney donation represents an altruistic act of bravery and generosity. It also
imposes some additional risks to the donor. With the increase of patientsí survival in other
modalities of renal replacement therapies and an improvement in the outcomes of deceased
donor renal transplantation, it may be harder, nowadays, to justify submitting healthy
donors to nephrectomy. However, living-donor renal transplantation is still largely
performed and even encouraged in some places. Culturally, legally, and morally accepted
in most countries, we need to address the bioethics of this procedure. In this chapter, we
intend to briefly discuss the risks of living kidney donation and propose a framework to
deal with this medical dilemma.
