Comprehensive Review of Iron Therapy in Chronic Kidney Disease (pp. 33-42) $100.00
Authors:  (Stephen Z. Fadem)
Anemia is an accepted manifestation of chronic kidney disease. Its chief cause is the
lack of production of erythropoietin by the damaged kidney. Iron replacement by oral
medications is possible in chronic kidney disease patients not requiring dialysis, but as the
disease advances, parenteral iron therapy may be necessary. Parenteral iron is preferred in
patients who are undergoing dialysis therapy. Complications of iron management include
acute hypersensitivity reactions, susceptibility to infection, exacerbation of inflammation
and iron overload. Newer formulations are available and show promise in reducing
complications of therapy.
