Kidney Patient Education: Philosophy, Practice, and Resources (pp. 21-32) $100.00
Authors:  (Dori Schatell)
Abstract:
Patient education is essential for improving outcomes in chronic kidney disease, and,
in fact, for any chronic illness, as the patient experiences the disease and symptoms all the
time, while healthcare intervention is episodic. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates
that 40% of chronic disease health outcomes are driven by individual patient behavior,
while just 10% are due to clinician decisions. Patients drive their own health outcomes. To
maximize their contributions, we must thus activate them to self-manage effectively and
become their own experts. We can engage patients in this critical task by explaining the
rationales for behaviors we want them to adopt, by reframing messages, acknowledging
and addressing emotions patients have at diagnosis, and by offering hope. Educational
resources are available that are written at an appropriate reading level, grounded in
motivational theory, and designed to support active self-management of chronic kidney
disease and its treatments.
