Cameroon in the 21st Century: Challenges and Prospects. Volume 1: Governance and Businesses $230.00
Editors: Isabelle Piot-Lepetit (Senior Research Scientist in Economics, MOISA INRA, Department of Economics, Economics and Management Division, Montpellier, France)
Book Description:
Cameroon, or officially the Republic of Cameroon, is a country with vast natural resources and a population of 22.8 million people. It is also culturally and geographically very diverse. Due to its geographical and cultural diversity, Cameroon is often referred to as “Africa in miniature.” This country is currently considered a lower-middle income country by the World Bank with social indicators and levels of poverty which are below those for comparator countries. However, the Government of Cameroon aims to achieve the state of a higher middle-income country by 2035. There exists huge potential for economic growth and poverty reduction in Cameroon.

The aim of the book is to provide an overview of the main issues, challenges, and prospects faced by Cameroon. The book is composed of conceptual and empirical studies of Cameroonian scholars gathered together in order to provide descriptions and explanations of main issues as well as policy recommendations to support decisions-makers. These considerations are those of Cameroonians for Cameroon.

The book is organized into two volumes. The first one entitled “Governance and Businesses” is devoted to issues relating to public governance, investment climate, insecurity, globalization, business development, and activities that are sources of employment in Cameroon. The second volume entitled “Environment and People” deals with issues concerning the management of cross cutting economic services, the conservation of forests, the sustainable development of agricultural activities, the role of women, the immobility of workers, problems of development and poverty alleviation, millennium development goals, the performance of microfinance institutions, multilingualism and education in Cameroon. Book Reviews

“The 21st century, which goes from 2001 to 2100, represents a vital agenda for Africa in general, bearing the hope of an emergence that was not reached in the previous century, because of inertias and exogenous and internal turpitudes. Cameroon in particular, Africa in miniature, is the archetypal theater of this concern, as evidenced by the holding in Yaoundé in May 2010 of the international conference “Africa 21”, which gathered together almost all the Heads of State of the African Continent, to assess realities and challenges of an Africa in a posture of “luck for the world.” This book, of apodictic relevance, is in line with this logic. It is the most epistemological overview of what can be expected in the 21st century to bring to Cameroon, in fields as diverse as water, forest and environment; urbanization and security of tenure; agriculture and financing for development; education and governance; gender and bilingualism. Thirty chapters divided into two volumes are therefore available to any reader wishing to immerse themselves in the realities and major challenges of Cameroon in the current century.” - René Joly Assako Assako, Professor, Vice-Rector, Member of the Cameroon Academy of Sciences, Knight of the International Order of the Academic Palmas of the African and Malagasy Council for Higher Education, University of Yaoundé I, Cameroon

"Cameroon aims at achieving emergence by 2035. For it, the country has unquestionably the capacity to achieve this objective: the richness of the subsoil, the dynamism of entrepreneurship, a cultural, linguistic and religious diversity, human resources, the relative stability of institutions, so many assets to be put in synergy. This book provides an overview of the current situation of this country and presents promising prospects for the next two decades. We strongly recommend it to students, teachers, researchers, politicians, and any investor." - Jean Biwolé Fouda, Professeur of Management, Vice Dean, Faculty of Economics and Management, University of Yaoundé II, Cameroon

"The book as a timely contribution to knowledge offers very interesting insights from rigorous theoretical and empirical frameworks on policy issues surrounding inclusive and sustainable development in Cameroon. It is an easy-to-read and richly policy-relevant book for both specialists and non-specialists who might require additional technical skills to grasp the rigorous empirical analyses and resulting policy insights. It can be summarised in one sentence: a policy road map for a developing country in the post-2015 sustainable development agenda." - Simplice Asongu, PhD, African Governance and Development Institute (AGDI)

"Africa is coming of age, a new reality that is perfectly exemplified by this collection of 30 essays by Cameroonian scholars on important policy issues in Cameroon. Africans are looking at their own economic performance with lucidity and rigor, charting a course for the future. This is important. We need more work of this kind." - Marcel Fafchamps, Professor, Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, Stanford University, USA
