Book Description:
The end of 2015 has brought the end of WHO’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which have achieved a significant, though patchy improvement in global maternal and child health. The new-born health and stillbirths were not on the global agenda of MDGs. Hence, the global burden of neonatal and perinatal mortality remained largely unchanged.

With the dawn of 2016, the world entered into the new era of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs mandate all participating nations to reduce neonatal mortality rate to <12 per 1000 live births by 2030. The nations worldwide have unanimously committed to this objective though there is a wide variation in their individual socioeconomic, cultural and health care set up. With this in mind, it is important to understand the current burden of global neonatal and perinatal mortality, its risk factors and interventions required to reach the SDG target by 2030. This book on neonatal perinatal mortality compiles a comprehensive and systematic reviews assembled by panels of experts from well recognized institutions worldwide on the current status and determinants of neonatal perinatal deaths and the evidence based interventions required to reduce these deaths worldwide. Book Reviews

“The deaths of babies at and around the time of birth, is both a devastating human tragedy, and an important metric for societies and health care systems. This book, edited by a group of highly respected paediatric leaders, addresses this global challenge and discusses risks and interventions. I commend it to all who wish to see a reduction in perinatal and neonatal mortality, and all babies given the best start to life-long health.” - Neena Modi, Professor of Neonatal Medicine Imperial College London, President, Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health London UK

"This book sets out both the global challenges of reducing perinatal mortality combined with important insights into how these are being addressed in the Eastern Mediterranean." - David Field, Professor of Neonatal Medicine, Department of Health Sciences, University of Leicester, Centre for Medicine

"This is an important compilation of evidence syntheses and reviews on neonatal and perinatal health, especially survival of relevance to the region and also to low and middle income countries at large. With the large bevy of authors from various disciplines, the book is an excellent compilation of information and provides much food for thought for implementation and action." - Zulfiqar A Bhutta, Co-Director, Director of Research, Robert Harding Inaugural Chair in Global Child Health, Centre for Global Child Health, The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada & Centre of Excellence in Women & Child Health, the Aga Khan University, South-Central Asia and East Africa
