Abstract:
Current surveys suggest that chronic pain affects
as many as 3% of the worldwide population and
substantially deteriorates quality of life of patients and
their families. Despite aggressive pharmacological
and non-pharmacological interventions, many patients
with chronic pain remain with unsatisfactory levels of
pain relief. For these patients, options remain very
limited and it is not uncommon to find them caught in
a vicious cycle of failed treatments. There is evidence
that patients with chronic pain are twice as likely to
commit suicide as compared with healthy population
and lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts in chronic
pain population is about 10%. Thus, there is an urgent
need for the development of new pain-management
approaches.
