The quantum wave packet method used to investigate the coherent control of the
molecular dynamics by femtosecond laser field is reviewed in this chapter. By
numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, several control schemes
were proposed focusing on three aspects of the molecular dynamics, i.e., the population
transfer, the photodissociation branching ratios, and the field-free molecular orientation.
Calculations are performed by considering diatomic molecules, such as Na2, HI, Br2, NaI,
and HF, exposed in linear polarized laser fields. By properly choosing the femtosecond
laser parameters, such as the pulse durations, delay times, frequencies, carrier envelope
phases, and intensities, efficient control can be achieved for these three aspects. The
control schemes can be extended to other molecular systems or other aspects of
molecular dynamics.
