Aortic valve disease management remains challenging for clinicians despite advances in medical imaging and surgical techniques.
With the advent of percutaneous management strategies for diseases of the aortic valve, the imaging cardiologist has several important roles.
Firstly, the role of percutaneous technology in individual patients with different types of aortic valve diseases should be considered in the context of existing treatment options such as surgical replacement vs. medical therapy.
Secondly, the imaging cardiologist has the fundamental role in assessing the suitability of patients undergoing percutaneous aortic valve replacement, as well as in the intraoperative guidance of the procedure.
This chapter will be divided into two parts.
1) The medical aspects of aortic valve diseases will be considered, with discussion on the etiology, natural history and current management strategies. The emphasis will be on how transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) using percutaneous technology fit with the current management of aortic valve disease.
2) The role of imaging in the assessment of potential TAVI candidates and peri-procedural echocardiography in the guidance of TAVI will be discussed.
