A Conservative Prosthodontic Approach for the Treatment of a Patient with Atrophic, Flabby and Unemployed Edentulous Ridges: A Case Report (pp. 49-58) $45.00
Authors:  Kathleen Manuela D'souza and A. Aras Meena
Abstract:
Loss of teeth causes remodeling and progressive resorption of the alveolar bone,
eventually leading to atrophic, flabby and unemployed edentulous ridges. Such patients
are known to experience complications, such as soreness in the denture-bearing area and
displacement of the dentures, when treated with conventional complete dentures. This
article reports a case of a geriatric patient with atrophic, flabby and unemployed
edentulous ridges. Various techniques and treatment strategies were proposed to manage
such ridges using metal denture bases, implant-supported dental prostheses,
vestibuloplasty and ridge augmentation. However, the patient was unable to tolerate
surgical intervention and had financial constraints restricting the treatment option. A
patient-centered approach was then adopted which included controlled-pressure
techniques for impression-making, neutral zone recording and fabrication of liquidsupported
dentures.
