Abstract:
The aim is to raise the importance of the study of genotoxicity, its effects and how to
prevent it, as well as the use of a biomonitor to detect these agents. It will point out in a
practical and applied manner the use of the micronucleus assay as an indicator of damage
and how to detect DNA damage, considering new uses of this technique that are easy to
implement and to interpret, as well as being, economical, and also a review of the most
current information about this important subject. Addressed specifically in our research is
our interest in about the search for new models to be used as biomonitors, taking into
account our experience of working with peripheral blood erythrocytes from more than
150 different species, including humans, with an emphasis on the more suitable and
feasible models, and to demonstrate their usefulness in different studies, considering the
characteristics of the species to be tested, the advantages and disadvantages of each one,
the influence of age, the applicability of the model in different areas of biomedical and
clinic research, covering also the wide use of this test for detected genotoxic and/or the
teratogenic potential, as well as damage marker and a tool to study the effects of diverse
pathological conditions, and also to show the technical innovation for genotoxic study
using amphibians and rat epithelial cells for genotoxicity studies in the laboratory and in
the field by means of noninvasive and easy new proposals. It will also highlight the
problem in the design of new methodological approaches and characteristics to be taken
into account for a proper development of studies in the genotoxicity area.
