Abstract:
Trypanosoma cruzi is a protozoan parasite causing Chagas disease, which has a
major public health importance. The recent completion of the sequencing of its genome
has opened new opportunities to further our understanding of the evolution of the parasite
and its interactions with mammalian and insect hosts. As a consequence, new targets
have been identified for the development of drug treatments and vaccines against this
parasite. These include the identification of key metabolic pathways and novel antigens,
as is reviewed here. Further sequencing of additional parasite strains is allowing
comparative genomic studies to be performed, shedding new light on the meaning and
consequences of parasite genetic diversity for pathogenesis and disease control. These
studies cast little doubt that T. cruzi genome represents a major resource for
understanding key aspects of this parasite’s biology, and the increasing use of these tools
will bring new momentum to the development of novel drugs and vaccines to control this
important parasite.
