Lustbader et al. have evaluated the requirement for a second brain death (BD) examination on organ donation. These authors reviewed data from 1,229 adult and 82 pediatric patients pronounced brain dead in 100 New York hospitals, concluding that a single examination is enough to confirm BD for patients older than 1 year [1].
