Editors: Frank Scott Hall (Molecular Neurobiology Branch, Intramural Research Program, National Institute on Drug Abuse, Baltimore, MD, USA)
Book Description:
Serotonin has long been known to have important roles in many systems of the body that impact human health and disease. In this volume a number of leading researchers in the serotonin field discuss the functions of serotonin in the nervous system, and other bodily systems, based on accumulating knowledge from both clinical and preclinical studies. Preclinical studies across a broad range of vertebrate and non-vertebrate model organisms are considered that implicate a deep evolutionary history for serotonin function that substantiate the validity of these model systems. Although the importance of serotonin in many areas of medical and biological research has been appreciated for some time, the importance of serotonin in many areas of research is still emerging. This volume considers many of these long-standing areas of study in serotonin research, including well-established conditions in which serotonin is known to have important roles, including anxiety, depression and alcoholism, but for which new information has continued to emerge - in addition to newer areas of study in which the importance of serotonin is just coming to be appreciated. Deepening understanding of these functions of serotonin systems will provide novel avenues of exploration for the development of therapeutic approaches to treat the medical conditions in which serotonin has been implicated.
