Application of Solid Hydrogen Peroxide for Tooth Whitening Therapy (pp.267-276)

Abstract: Hydrogen perde has been widely used by dentists for vital tooth whitening to improve the esthetics of the dentition during two decade. Now two types of whitening therapy are practiced, one is in-office whitening using hydrogen peroxide gel, and the other is home whitening using carbamide peroxide gel. Though these procedures are accepted for tooth whitening, there are several serious problems in management and stability of hydrogen peroxide. These problems are basically owing to fluidity of the reagent. To resolve these problems, I developed a new technology to solidify hydrogen peroxide solution.
Solid hydrogen peroxide (Shp) has following features.
1. Shp is easy for handling and has no irritant activity for skin and mucous membrane when keeping dry condition.
2. Shp is stable for a longer time than hydrogen peroxide solution. Shp keeps bleaching activity at least one month at room temperature; on the other hand, same amount of hydrogen peroxide solution loses activity within 5 days by the evaporation.
3. Shp is able to immortalize on synthetic resin. It is possible to form the hybrid resin containing hydrogen peroxide.
4. Shp fixes easily and tightly on tooth surface compared with commercial whitening reagent.
Shp was applied for vital tooth whitening, and was recognized that more than 90% of patients felt the effect of therapy within one week.
Therefore, Shp is superior to commercial whitening reagent as regarding effect and management.
