Abstract: Ionic liquids (ILs) as green solvents are attracting increasing interest from industry and academic in the whole world during past years. The researches on ILs are developing at an incredible rate. Their negligible vapor pressure, high thermal stability and relatively
high viscosity make them different from the conventional organic solvents. This review focuses on the major physical and chemical properties of ILs related to the extraction application including polarity, pH value, melting point and solubility, etc. The review
take some examples to illustrate the applications of ILs in various subjects of extraction, including extraction of biological molecular, active components from natural products, organic compounds from other resources except natural products and metal ions, etc. Current status of the application of ILs in the extraction and most significant
achievements were reviewed. The comparison between traditional organic solvents and ILs in the application of extraction suggested that ILs would be a potential excellent solvent with wide application range in various extraction processes.
