Aquatic Ecotoxicology in Tasks of Water Quality Assessments: Moving from Theory to Practices pp. 283-308 $100.00
Authors:  (T. I. Moiseenko, Institute of Water Problems, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia)
Abstract:
Aquatic ecotoxicology is defined as a scientific discipline, studying the properties and behavior of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, as well as the impact of pollutants on organisms, populations, and communities. The history of development of this discipline in Russia and Western country, and its theoretical foundations is considered. A methodological approach to water quality assessment within the scope of the ecotoxicology is substantiated. The role of aquatic ecotoxicology in solving practical problems related to the substantiation of the criteria for water quality assessment and standardization of human-induced water contamination is demonstrated. A rationale for the system of criteria for the diagnosis of aquatic ecosystems (on level individual, population and communities) is given on the basis of analysis of determinate changes in their organization levels under toxic stress. The results of testing the proposed methods in water objects of Russia (Volga‘s reservoirs and subarctic lake Imandra ) are described.
