Abstract:
Azobenzene doped or covalently bonded polymers (azopolymers in short) have been attracted much attention for their potential technological applications. Many of these applications are possible due to efficient photoisomerization and photoinduced anisotropy of the azobenzene groups. Research works and related technique developments in this field are reviewed, focusing on functionalities and characteristics of azopolymers, which include photoinduced refractive index change, liquid crystallinity, photoinduced phase transition, photowettability, nonlinear optical(NLO) properties, photoinduced alignment, and photoinduced birefringence(PIB) and chirality. Furthermore, some chemical and physical influencing factors upon the photoinduced processes have also been reviewed. Chemical factors are mainly about structures including covalently linked with the main chain, the substitutes linking to azobenzene, extending the conjugation of azobenzene by adding one azobenzence, the spacer length and cross-linking. And physical factors include the azo concentration, confinement effect, the film thickness, temperature, and pump beam type and intensity. Understanding the fundamental properties of azopolymers enables us to make use of these structures in a variety of applications, such as display devices, optical switching, optical waveguides, holography, coupler, mask, reversible optical storage, photomotor, DFB laser, polarizers and so on.
