Authors: Sofronios E. Papoutsoglou (Agricultural University of Athens, Greece)
Book Description:
The discovery and study of the biological action of substances possessing hormonal properties comprise a considerable step towards a more comprehensive illustration of fish physiology. Fish in their vast majority do not constitute merely the most populous and phylogenetically oldest vertebrate group of organisms, but also a constant source of information regarding the mode of action of physiological and endocrinological processes of the phylogenetically evolved vertebrates, including mammals and humans. Although cells with neurohormonal properties have been identified in fish during the first decades of the 20th century, it is only over the past thirty years that these cells have been the object of intensive research efforts which, at an ever accelerating pace, are attaining a number of significant goals. This book presents current research in the study of fish endocrinology. (Imprint: Nova)

"This is a remarkable and outstanding book which constitutes a unique acquisition for both Greek and international scientific literature. As clinician and researcher I was impressed by the similarities between the endocrine function of fish and humans. I was particularly amazed by the information this book provides on the neuro-hormonal response to stress exposition of fish and the influence of music on fish growth. This distinct edition by Prof. Sofronios Papoutsoglou represents a unique scientific offer in modern biology that first will definitely lead to better understanding of common pathways in vertebrate physiology and second will facilitate scientific dialogue between different disciplines of biology." Reviewed by Dr. Athanasios Dritsas MD, FESC, Cardiologist, Head of Exercise Physiology and Cardiac Rehabilitation Section, Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center
